VETERAN politician Ronnie Liu has returned to active politics by joining Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), more than three years after quitting DAP following a dispute over constitutional amendments governing party membership.

Liu announced his decision at a press conference today alongside PBM president and Julau MP Larry Sng, ending a political hiatus that followed more than four decades with DAP.

The 41-year DAP veteran served several terms on the party’s central executive committee and was among its longest-serving figures.

Liu first entered the Selangor state assembly as the Pandamaran representative in 2008, serving until 2013 and holding a state executive councillor portfolio during that period.

He returned to the state assembly in 2018 as the Sungai Pelek representative and remained in the seat until 2022.

Liu left DAP in June 2023 after opposing amendments to the party’s constitution that provided for the automatic termination of membership for elected representatives who went against the party’s position on fundamental matters.

He had argued that the amendments were inconsistent with democratic principles and risked curbing differing views within the party.

His move to PBM marks a fresh political chapter for Liu after more than 40 years with DAP and a period away from active party politics. - August 9, 2026
