POLICE have detained three Rohingya men to assist investigations into an alleged sexual offence involving a 23-year-old disabled woman, following a report received two days ago.
Kemaman district police chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli said the three suspects, aged between 19 and 28, were arrested after police received a report from a woman.
“Police confirm that a report was received and arrests have been made. Police have obtained a five-day remand order until Aug 12 for further investigations.
“The arrests of all three suspects of Rohingya descent were made to assist investigations under Section 376 of the Penal Code,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Razi urged the public not to engage in baseless speculation as investigations into the case were still ongoing.
“Police are still conducting investigations to identify other suspects who may have been involved.
“We need to examine this case thoroughly, and the victim must also be given sufficient time and space before the investigation is completed, as the victim is a 23-year-old disabled person,” he said.
He also urged the public to exercise caution when using social media platforms and not to contribute to panic, unrest or threats to public safety and order.
“The public is also urged not to take hasty action against Rohingya individuals, which could indirectly lead to them becoming involved in crime.
“Police are ready at any time to listen to the public and provide clarification regarding this case,” he said.
