MALAYSIA is targeting RM85 billion in net energy savings over the next decade under a new national efficiency plan designed to accelerate the country’s transition towards net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) launched the National Energy Efficiency Policy and Action Plan 2026-2035 (NEEAP 2.0) today in conjunction with the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES).
The plan is intended to embed energy efficiency across the industrial, commercial and domestic sectors, with priority given to high-impact areas capable of supporting economic growth while encouraging wider participation among Malaysians.
NEEAP 2.0 targets an 11.6 per cent improvement in electricity and thermal energy efficiency compared with a business-as-usual scenario, translating into estimated cumulative energy savings of 815,000 terajoules (TJ).
PETRA said the projected savings were equivalent to the energy required to meet the entire electricity demand of Peninsular Malaysia for almost two years.
The 10-year plan is also expected to attract RM36 billion in private investment and generate about 29,000 new employment opportunities, providing further impetus to Malaysia’s green economy and energy transition.
Environmentally, NEEAP 2.0 is projected to cut carbon emissions by an estimated 26 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂eq) by 2035.
PETRA said the initiative was aligned with the Malaysia MADANI agenda by promoting efficient and sustainable energy use while supporting public wellbeing, low-carbon development and the long-term sustainability of the country’s energy resources. - August 11, 2026
