BARISAN Nasional (BN) will remain in the Federal Government until the end of the current term, BN Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said today.

Khaled said the coalition’s commitment to the unity government should not be viewed as something that could be changed based on political developments or circumstances.

He said BN’s decision to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) at the federal level was made with the aim of maintaining political stability.

“This includes BN’s participation and position in the Federal Government together with PH.

“Our commitment to the formation of this Federal Government was made with the awareness that political stability is important for the country,” he said.

Khaled, who is also Umno vice-president, was commenting on PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s remarks that PKR would continue its cooperation with BN and Umno at the federal level in the interests of political stability and the people.

Anwar had said political decisions should not be driven by anger or vested interests, but by considerations of the country and the people.

According to Khaled, BN’s decision to contest against PH in the Sabah, Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections did not affect its commitment at the federal level.

“Differences in state administrations do not prevent good cooperation at the federal level.

“This is part of the unique political reality in our country. Such political arrangements should be accepted with maturity and openness,” he added.

On the 16th General Election (GE16), Khaled explained that BN would decide on its political direction when the time came.

He stressed that the upcoming election should not be used as a reason to alter BN’s existing commitment to the federal government.

“For now, BN will remain committed and serious in carrying out its role and responsibilities in the Federal Government until the end of the term,” he said. – August 18, 2026
