A 38-YEAR-OLD inmate at Marang Prison died after allegedly being beaten by three fellow prisoners, with police believing the attack was linked to an old debt and resentment towards the victim.
Marang District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Sofian Redzuan said police received a report from a prison warden at about 12.31pm yesterday that the inmate had been assaulted by other prisoners.
He said the victim was taken to Merchang Health Clinic for treatment, but medical officers confirmed that he had died.
“The victim’s body was subsequently sent to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem.
“The post-mortem confirmed that the cause of death was a ruptured spleen caused by blunt-force trauma, such as punches or kicks,” he said.
Mohd Sofian said police had identified three suspects — one aged 21 and two aged 35 — who were allegedly involved in the attack.
“Preliminary investigations found that the incident stemmed from an old debt and also the suspects’ resentment towards the victim.
“The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, and further investigations are ongoing before the three suspects are brought before the court,” he said. - August 25, 2026
