TWENTY-THREE passengers were injured after a tour bus was involved in an accident at the Kanowit Roundabout in Sibu Jaya early this morning.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said its Operations Centre received an emergency call at 2.25am before a team from the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters assisted in evacuating a woman who was still trapped inside the bus and brought her to safety.

“Another 42 victims were assisted out of the bus by members of the public before the arrival of the rescue team,” the department said in a statement.

The injured passengers received initial medical treatment from medical personnel at the scene before being taken to Sibu Hospital and Kanowit Hospital for further treatment.

The rescue operation involved six firefighters and ended at about 4.50am after the scene was declared safe.

The circumstances surrounding the accident and the cause of the crash have yet to be disclosed. - August 31, 2026
