ARTIFICIAL Intelligence (AI) could become a powerful new engine of productivity for Malaysia, helping businesses reduce costs, enabling workers to focus on higher-value tasks and allowing the Government to deliver public services more efficiently.
The opportunity extends far beyond technology companies and data centres, says 27 Group Founder Girish Mavath Ramachandran. “AI could be deployed across farms, plantations, factories, hospitals, logistics companies, tourism operators, government agencies and small businesses, allowing Malaysia to generate more value from its existing workforce, land, infrastructure and capital.
“For ordinary Malaysians, the potential benefits could include more competitive businesses, faster public services, more efficient healthcare, greater food security and new opportunities for higher-value employment.”
SMEs Could Gain Capabilities Once Reserved for Large Companies
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could be among the biggest beneficiaries of widespread AI adoption, Girish said, adding, affordable AI tools can help smaller companies perform tasks that previously required additional employees, specialist software or expensive consultants.
“A retailer could analyse customer behaviour and forecast demand. A manufacturer could identify production bottlenecks and predict equipment failures. A restaurant could improve purchasing and reduce food waste, while a logistics operator could optimise delivery routes,” he explained.
Girish argues for SMEs facing labour shortages and rising operating costs, AI could provide additional productive capacity without requiring a proportional increase in headcount. The wider economic benefit could be substantial if thousands of Malaysian SMEs become more efficient, competitive and capable of expanding into domestic and international markets.
More Value from Every Worker and Resource
AI could also help Malaysia address a structural challenge facing its economy.
Malaysia cannot rely indefinitely on a larger workforce, greater land use or increasing capital investment to generate economic growth. With the population ageing and labour supply becoming tighter, productivity will become increasingly important, Girish opines, adding: “AI can help businesses make faster and better decisions, automate repetitive processes and use resources more efficiently.”
The objective is therefore not simply to employ more people, but to enable each worker, machine, hectare and ringgit of investment to generate greater economic value, And, this could allow Malaysia to sustain growth even as demographic conditions become more challenging.

Agriculture could Produce More from Existing Land
Agriculture and plantations offer an important opportunity to apply AI beyond the technology sector.
“AI can combine satellite imagery, drone data, weather information, soil conditions and historical production records to identify crop stress, forecast yields and determine where resources are needed.
“In plantations, the technology could improve harvesting schedules, fertiliser application, equipment maintenance, labour deployment and transportation between estates and mills. — The benefit goes beyond efficiency.”
Malaysia could produce more food and agricultural output from existing land while reducing waste, input costs and dependence on labour, he said, and that would strengthen food security and make rural economies more resilient to climate volatility and global supply disruptions.
“The same principle can be applied across the food chain, from farming and aquaculture to livestock, processing, cold-chain logistics and food manufacturing.”
AI could Make Healthcare Faster and More Preventive
Healthcare is another area where AI could deliver benefits directly to the public.
Girish said: “AI can assist with appointment scheduling, medical documentation, administrative processing, patient monitoring and the analysis of large amounts of health information. Reducing administrative workloads could allow doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to spend more time with patients.
AI could also help identify health risks earlier, supporting a shift towards prevention rather than relying primarily on treatment after people become seriously ill. This will become increasingly important as Malaysia’s population ages.
The long-term economic benefit would be a healthier population, fewer lost working days and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
Public Services could Become Quicker And Easier
The Government also handles enormous volumes of applications, documents, enquiries and administrative processes — areas where AI could deliver immediate productivity gains.
Government agencies could use AI to help process routine applications, identify bottlenecks, analyse demand, translate information and detect anomalies. This would not necessarily mean replacing public servants.
Instead, it could free them from repetitive administrative work so they can focus on cases requiring human judgement and direct engagement with citizens.
For Malaysians, the practical result could be simpler processes, shorter waiting times and faster government services, he said.
AI could Strengthen Malaysia’s Energy Resilience
AI could also become an important part of Malaysia’s energy transition.
“As electricity demand rises from industrial activity, digital infrastructure and data centres, while the country expands renewable energy, managing the power system will become increasingly complex. AI can help forecast electricity demand, optimise supply, identify equipment problems and improve the integration of renewable energy into the grid,” Girish said.
Factories and buildings could use AI to identify energy wastage and automatically adjust consumption, reducing operating costs.
Malaysia could also develop domestic expertise in energy software, engineering, maintenance and digital energy management rather than simply importing technology.
Its palm-oil and agricultural sectors provide additional opportunities in biomass and biogas, allowing waste streams to become sources of energy and rural income.

Tourism could Focus On Higher-Value Visitors
AI could help Malaysia generate greater economic value from tourism without relying solely on increasing visitor numbers.
Tourism operators can use data to understand visitor preferences, forecast demand, personalise experiences and improve pricing and resource allocation. AI-powered translation and digital assistants could also make Malaysia easier for international visitors to navigate.
This could support higher-value segments such as medical and wellness tourism, eco-tourism, heritage, food, events and longer-stay travel.
For local communities, the objective would be to generate more spending and better-paying economic activity from tourism, he added.
New Technology Could Create New Jobs
The AI transition should not be viewed only through the jobs that technology may automate.
It could create demand for workers who understand both AI and the industries in which it is being deployed. Malaysia will need people capable of applying AI to manufacturing, plantations, healthcare, logistics, finance, tourism, law and other sectors.
“An engineer who understands both manufacturing and AI, for example, could help a Malaysian factory redesign production process and increase efficiency. Agricultural specialists with AI skills could develop systems for crop management and plantation operations,” he said.
This creates an opportunity to build a workforce with deep industry knowledge combined with technological capability.
Malaysia’s advantage may therefore come not from producing only more generic AI specialists, but from developing professionals who know how to apply AI to Malaysian economic strengths.
Malaysia Can Become An AI Implementer
Malaysia does not necessarily need to compete with the United States or China to build the world's most powerful AI model. Its opportunity could instead be to become exceptionally good at implementing AI throughout a diverse economy.
“That means taking AI beyond data centres and technology companies and putting it to work in farms, factories, hospitals, SMEs, government departments, schools and logistics networks.
“It also means developing Malaysian capability in data management, cybersecurity, AI integration, local-language applications and sector-specific systems. The more Malaysian companies own the expertise, operational data, systems and intellectual property created through AI adoption, the greater the share of the economic value that can remain within the country,” he said.
The Real Test Is What Malaysians Gain
If Malaysia succeeds in deploying AI effectively, the benefits could eventually be felt across everyday economic life. Workers could spend less time on repetitive administration and more time on productive and creative tasks. SMEs could access capabilities previously available mainly to large corporations.
Farmers and plantation operators could produce more while reducing waste and resource use. Hospitals could process patients and information more efficiently. Factories could reduce energy consumption and production losses. And, government services could become faster.
Tourism operators could provide more personalised services. And new industries could create higher-value employment, Girish said on AI’s benefits to the nation.
“The key measure of Malaysia’s AI success should therefore not simply be the number of AI investments, data centres or technology projects attracted to the country. It should be whether AI makes Malaysian workers, businesses and public institutions more productive — and whether Malaysians share in the value created.”
AI allows Malaysia to move beyond an economic model increasingly dependent on more labour, land and capital towards one driven by knowledge, technology and higher productivity. The country does not necessarily need to win the global race to build the biggest AI model.
“It needs to win the race to put AI to work across the Malaysian economy. If that happens, artificial intelligence could become much more than another technology sector. It could become a productivity multiplier that helps Malaysia produce more, waste less, improve public services, strengthen critical sectors and create better economic opportunities for Malaysians over the next generation, he added. - August 31, 2026
