GEORGE TOWN – Malaysians housed at the low-risk Covid-19 treatment centre in the Balik Pulau sports complex have been transferred to a similar facility at the Zakat Training Centre (Pulaza) in Pantai Acheh following complaints.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government is aware of the inconvenience of the locals having to be housed with foreigners, apart from the lack of sanitary facilities.

“All local patients will be transferred immediately.”

Previously, the zakat centre was used to quarantine locals who returned from abroad, he told a press conference today.

The Vibes had reported that local Covid-19 patients undergoing quarantine at the Balik Pulau sports complex were living under duress.

They did not feel comfortable sharing the facility with hundreds of foreign patients also housed there.

The situation was aggravated by the insufficient amenities at the complex.

It is understood that there were only two functional toilets while more than 300 patients were forced to share 10 bathrooms.

The beds were also said to be arranged too close to one another and there was no clear SOP among patients. – The Vibes, January 6, 2021
