GEORGE TOWN – A foreign worker at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) construction site has died following a workplace accident.
Port officials said in the 11am incident, the employee got stuck when installing piles off the coast.
The Vibes was told that the victim, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man, was taken to hospital with severe head and neck injuries.
“The victim was rushed to Penang Hospital, and died while receiving treatment.
“Currently, operations at the construction site have been temporarily stopped.”
The Vibes has contacted the Northeast district police chief for an official report.
Last year, the Finance Ministry announced that SPCT upgrading works will begin next month.
The four-phase upgrading comes at a cost of RM500 million, and will expand the existing base up to 400m to allow two mega cruise ships to arrive at the same time.
The development is expected to be completed in 2025.
The project in the 2.83ha area will enable SPCT to receive up to three million visitors a year. – The Vibes January 6, 2021
