THE National Registration Department (NRD) will begin issuing a new-generation MyKad featuring 53 security features from tomorrow (Sept 17), replacing the current card’s 23.
JPN said 40 branches nationwide equipped with printing facilities would be ready to issue the new MyKad, with cards available on the same day.
“After more than two decades, the time has come for a new generation to take its place, bringing improvements to the design, structure and security features of the MyKad,” NRD said in a Facebook post today.
The upgraded identity card features a QR code for verification and enforcement purposes, hologram technology, microtext, ultraviolet security features, laser engraving and a chip with a higher level of encryption.
NRD said the improvements were expected to strengthen identity verification while reducing the risk of forgery and misuse of identification documents.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail meanwhile urged the public not to rush to JPN offices when applications for the new MyKad open.
The department said the rollout would be carried out in stages, with the new card initially introduced at NRD headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected offices before being expanded nationwide.
The phased approach is intended to ensure a smooth and orderly implementation and prevent congestion at counters.
NRD advised the public that there was no need to rush to replace their existing MyKad, as the rollout would be gradual and would not require everyone to change their cards simultaneously.
There are currently about 24 million active MyKad, while JPN issues between 180,000 and 200,000 cards each month, making a gradual transition necessary to avoid severe congestion at its offices.
Saifuddin also said replacing the MyKad would not affect eligibility for subsidies, existing records or the transfer of balances, as the data remains linked to the individual’s existing identification profile.
On birth registration, NRD continues to record between 13,000 and 15,000 unregistered births annually, mainly involving financial constraints, social issues and family disputes.
Saifuddin reminded the public that birth registration in Malaysia is free and urged parents, guardians and relevant informants to come forward promptly to ensure children obtain the necessary legal documentation. - September 16, 2026
