POSTINGS on social media suggest that another senior minister is under the radar and likely to be called in for questioning in the near future.

The former cabinet member, who is also a long-serving MP from a southern state, is expected to be questioned over an ongoing investigation, according to the postings and insiders familiar with the matter.

It is understood that further action could follow, although there is no indication yet whether the former minister will be detained after questioning.

The Vibes could not independently verify the information, nor has there been a statement on any impending action against the former minister.

The expected move comes at a politically sensitive time, with Umno taking an increasingly hard line against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and positioning itself more aggressively ahead of the next general election.

It also comes amid growing speculation over the shape of Malaysia’s next political alignment, with questions of how major political parties intend to navigate the next election.

Political circles are watching closely for any signs of engagement between major players, particularly as Umno’s relationship with Anwar’s administration becomes increasingly strained.

Another former senior Umno figure being called in for questioning would inevitably raise questions about the political climate surrounding the MACC’s latest investigations.

The timing is particularly notable because the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission only last week rejected speculation that more senior Umno leaders were about to be arrested.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said on September 10 that the investigation or arrest of senior Umno leaders was not on the commission’s list.

Should another former minister now be called in, attention will inevitably turn to whether MACC’s scrutiny of former Umno leaders is widening.

The commission is already investigating former senior government figures in several cases.

Former minister Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom was detained following investigations arising from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the management and governance of Lembaga Tabung Haji and is expected to face three charges linked to the probe.

Another recent development involving former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has also added another layer to the political backdrop.

Muhyiddin was discharged and acquitted by the High Court of four charges linked to the Jana Wibawa programme after the prosecution applied to discontinue the charges.

The four charges involved one count of using his position to obtain RM200 million in bribes and three money-laundering charges involving the same amount.

He still faces three other abuse-of-power charges involving RM25.3 million.

The outcome is a reminder that being investigated or charged is not the same as being found guilty — something that will be closely watched if another former minister is brought before MACC.

For Umno, however, the political implications could be harder to contain.

The party is trying to regain political space while becoming increasingly critical of Anwar, even as it remains part of the federal administration.

That leaves a potentially volatile political equation: Umno is moving further away from Anwar politically, while the possibility of new alignments ahead of GE16 cannot be ruled out.

For now, the immediate question is whether the former minister will indeed be called in.

If that happens, the identity of the former cabinet member — and the investigation behind the questioning — will be under intense scrutiny. - September 16, 2026
