FAMILIES of 55 Malaysians still missing following the devastating floods in Nepal are struggling financially after being left without their main breadwinners, with relatives appealing for government assistance as they await news of their loved ones.

M. Subramaniam, 38, whose father-in-law V. Krishnan is among those still missing after joining a tour group to Mount Kailash, said most affected families were now shouldering their expenses without assistance.

“Most of the victims’ families are affected financially because the majority of the victims were breadwinners.

“So far, we have not received any assistance and we are bearing everything ourselves,” he told Utusan Malaysia yesterday.

Subramaniam said his family had yet to receive any contribution or assistance from any party.

He said the next-of-kin would meet representatives from Wisma Putra in Putrajaya on Sept 27 to obtain the latest updates on the search and identification efforts.

“Only two family members are allowed to attend the meeting. My wife and her sister will represent our family.

“We, the victims’ families, are still waiting and hoping. However, it is more about seeking closure because DNA identification is the only option left at this point,” he said.

Nepal’s government said the floods and debris flow on Aug 26, triggered by an ice and rock collapse in the upper catchment of the Lhende Khola in Tibet, killed 1,451 people.

About 5,700 people, including more than 600 foreign nationals, also remain missing in Nepal. -September 25, 2026
