THE Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) has reviewed concerns raised over an issue linking the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) to the New Age Movement (NAM).
JAKIM said the matter had been given serious attention and subjected to a detailed review involving the relevant religious authorities and experts.
A meeting was also held with the deputy minister to obtain a direct explanation on the issues raised.
The session involved the Federal Territories Mufti, JAKIM’s Creed Expert Panel and other relevant parties, the department said.
JAKIM director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the matter was examined from the perspective of Islamic creed, religious authority and the background of NAM.
“Following the meeting, several reminders, advice and guidelines were given, including on the content of programmes that had been conducted, as well as the approach used and its implications for religion and faith,” he said in a statement today.
He said emphasis was also placed on correcting and refining any content or approach that could cause confusion over matters relating to Islamic faith.
Sirajuddin said religious content should be based on Islamic scholarship and the views of recognised religious authorities.
JAKIM said it took note of questions raised by members of the public, including through a Facebook account belonging to Masyitah Ashari, over the issue involving NAM and the deputy minister.
The department reiterated its position against any teachings, beliefs, practices or approaches that were contrary to syarak and the principles of Islamic creed.
It also urged the public not to draw conclusions from material circulated without verification or presented out of context.
“JAKIM will continue to carry out its responsibility to safeguard the sanctity of the faith of Muslims firmly, responsibly and based on knowledge and religious authority,” Sirajuddin said. – September 27, 2026
