MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) personnel must have the courage to identify weaknesses within the organisation and put them right, said its chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman.

He said improper practices should be stopped, while mistakes must be acknowledged and corrected.

“If there are weaknesses, they must be improved, and if mistakes occur, they must be acknowledged and corrected,” he said when addressing the MACC’s 59th anniversary celebration and monthly assembly at its headquarters today.

Abd Halim said a strong organisation did not claim to have no weaknesses, but was one prepared to admit them and take corrective action.

He said shortcomings in areas such as procurement, investments, asset management, appointments and internal controls should serve as lessons for strengthening governance and preventing similar problems from recurring.

He also called on the commission to sharpen its intelligence, financial analysis, forensic and technological capabilities, while strengthening cooperation with other agencies to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated corruption offences.

“MACC cannot depend entirely on old and conventional methods. We must keep moving, keep progressing and continue to strengthen our capabilities,” he said.

Abd Halim said technological advances, cross-border transactions and the growing volume of data had changed the way crimes were committed, requiring MACC to improve its ability to detect and uncover new methods used by offenders.

He urged MACC personnel to keep building their expertise in law, technology, data analysis, finance, communications and forensics.

“Learn from experience and mistakes. The world changes, knowledge grows and modus operandi change. We too must change with them.

“The experience of previous generations must be combined with the energy, ideas and thinking of the younger generation,” he said.

Abd Halim said MACC had handled several high-impact cases involving public procurement and funds, strategic national institutions, border enforcement, environmental management and increasingly complex financial crimes.

These included investigations involving the top leadership of the Malaysian Armed Forces, Felda and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Lembaga Tabung Haji, he said.

He said the commission was also dealing with large-scale misappropriation of funds, share transactions worth hundreds of millions of ringgit and syndicates exploiting the immigration system through digital means.

Abd Halim also thanked MACC personnel and other parties involved in the investigations, including the RCI into Tabung Haji, Felda cases and other high-profile probes. – October 1, 2026
