PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Lee Chean Chung had been inactive in PKR for nearly a year, failing to attend party meetings and congresses.
Anwar said Lee had long ceased involvement in party affairs prior to announcing his resignation as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Petaling Jaya, effective today.
"He hasn't been involved in party matters for a long time—a year, in fact. He never attended party meetings or the congress," he said when met after inspecting the RMAF (Royal Malaysian Air Force) quarters at Sungai Besi today.
Anwar, who is also the PKR President and Pakatan Harapan (PH) Chairman, emphasised that if Lee was no longer interested in PKR, he could leave the party amicably; the party would still appreciate the contributions the former Petaling Jaya MP had made.
"So, it is appropriate. If there is no longer any interest, that is not a problem. Leave on good terms. Thank you for the contributions made over the years," he remarked.
Today, Lee announced his unconditional resignation as the MP for Petaling Jaya, following PKR's decision to suspend his membership for three years.
The resignation letter was submitted to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, yesterday.
He also indicated that he would submit an official letter to resign from PKR on Monday.
Lee had previously claimed that access to the RM3 million allocation for the Petaling Jaya constituency had been blocked and that the management of the allocation had been taken over by a party representative.
He also questioned the direction of the Anwar-led Unity Government, specifically regarding issues such as corruption, abuse of power, institutional reform, and several high-profile cases.
However, Anwar emphasised that constituency allocations for Petaling Jaya remain unaffected and that projects benefiting the residents will proceed.
“Constituency allocations are not affected. We have ensured that projects—whether for schools, suraus, mosques, temples, or roads—continue,” he added.
Regarding the possibility of PKR taking legal action against Lee, Anwar stated that the matter has been left to the PKR Secretary-General and the party's legal committee.
Lee had previously resigned from the PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) last June after 18 years with the party; however, at the time, he insisted he would remain a PKR member and continue his duties as the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya until Parliament is dissolved.
With this resignation, Lee joins the ranks of PKR MPs who have stepped down from their positions as elected representatives, following Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and Wong Chen. – October 2, 2026
