FAMILY members of the Form 4 student who was murdered at a school in Yong Peng yesterday revealed that the victim was the daughter of an engineer and a public health specialist.

However, the victim's mother passed away from liver cancer when the victim was nine years old, while her father works as an engineer in Bangi, Selangor.

The victim, Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, 16, aspired to follow in her late mother's footsteps and become a specialist doctor at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang.

Her aunt, Siti Nur Faeza Khyar, 45, said the deceased had previously spoken about this ambition.

“Fiya (Irene Sofiya) once spoke to me... she asked what kind of doctor would suit her. I suggested that becoming an obstetrician-gynaecologist would be a good choice.

“She said she wanted to become a doctor just like her late mother,” she said when met at her parents' home in Kampung Parit Selamat, Yong Peng, last night.

Siti Nur Faeza, who is also a teacher, described the deceased as a diligent student with a wonderful character who never caused trouble for the family.

She noted that the deceased was a quiet person who studied hard and frequently achieved excellent academic results.

“Whenever there were exams, Fiya would consistently rank first or second in her form.

“She also had the potential to achieve 9As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination next year.

“Fiya was a student in whom both her family and school placed high hopes.

"She really enjoyed studying and was very focused on her lessons," she said.

Regarding the incident that befell the victim, Siti Nur Faeza said she could not imagine the fear and pain her niece endured, especially while inside the dark school hall.

She had also gone out with her mother, Jameyah Rabani, 65, to search for Irene Sofiya on the day of the incident, after being informed that the victim had not returned home following the conclusion of extra classes at 5 pm yesterday.

"I cannot imagine the pain and suffering she endured before we found her. Just imagine her in pain and covered in blood, yet no one knew of her condition at the time.

"The perpetrator's actions were truly cruel. We hope the police will conduct an investigation and ensure that the person responsible receives a fitting punishment," she said. – October 4, 2026
