PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that active talks are underway to potentially bring Formula One (F1) back to Malaysia.

Speaking to Sky Sports during grand prix events at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today, Anwar confirmed that returning the world-famous motorsport series to the local circuit is under serious consideration.

Asked directly whether Malaysia could stage F1 once again, Anwar stated that he is looking forward to the possibility as discussions continue.

He highlighted that hosting major international motorsport events provides significant economic and promotional benefits for the country and Malaysian businesses.

Despite the challenging tropical heat during the event, Anwar remarked cheerfully that he was soaked in sweat but remained thrilled to see the nation celebrating the event.

Malaysia held a regular spot on the F1 calendar at SIC from 1999 until 2017.

Anwar refrained from revealing specific timelines or concrete plans, confirming only that negotiations are currently in progress.

Earlier, heavy rain and severe thunderstorms have delayed the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit today.

The race marks the first official outing of Formula One’s new hybrid-era machinery in wet conditions, as well as the sport's first return to the Sepang circuit since 2017.

The event was relocated from Bahrain to Malaysia due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Drivers face significant uncertainty due to minimal pre-season wet-weather testing, alongside concerns that the new intermediate tyre compound may prove too hard for Sepang's low-grip surface.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull is set to start from pole position, with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton lining up alongside him for Ferrari.

Race officials confirmed that the grand prix will commence once weather conditions improve and the circuit track is deemed safe for competition. - October 4, 2026
