THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has warned that people who circulate video footage of a school incident involving a dangerous weapon in Kuching, Sarawak, could face legal action if they breach laws protecting children and regulating online content.

The commission urged the public and media practitioners to stop uploading, sharing or redistributing the recordings, stressing that exposing the identities of children involved could violate Section 15 of the Child Act 2001.

In a statement on Thursday, the Commission said the distribution of such footage could also attract action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 if the content contravened the law.

MCMC said it was working with social media platform providers to curb the spread of the video, including taking steps to remove related content.

Those who had already uploaded or shared the recording were urged to delete it immediately.

The commission said circulating violent footage involving children could undermine their privacy, dignity and emotional well-being, as well as affect their families.

It also cautioned the public against reposting the material to protect the children’s privacy and avoid interfering with investigations by the authorities. - October 22, 2026
