KUALA LUMPUR – Police yesterday arrested 528 individuals for violating the conditional movement control order (CMCO), said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The senior minister in charge of security, in a statement today, said 525 people were issued compounds and three were detained.
He said the offences included entertainment centre activities (203 cases), failure to wear masks (149), failure to provide items needed to record personal details (101), failure to observe social distancing (73) and others (2).
Ismail Sabri said that 101,163 individuals have returned to Malaysia from July 24 last year until yesterday and undergone the mandatory quarantine at 75 hotels, and 17 public training institutions.
“Some 7,892 individuals are still undergoing quarantine, while 540 have been sent to the hospital for treatment. 92,731 individuals were allowed to return home.”
Meanwhile, he added that Ops Benteng, mounted by agencies including the police, immigration and customs department, as well as the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, led to the arrests of 38 illegal immigrants and seizure of three vehicles.
“The government will take stern action against any quarters that attempt to enter the country’s borders illegally, and enforcement agencies will continue to tighten border controls, especially along rat trails,” he said.
Earlier, Bernama reported Ismail Sabri as saying to the press in Kota Baru that Malaysians should stop spreading unverified information concerning a possible re-implementation of the movement control order (MCO).
He said sharing such rumours on social media will only lead to situations such as panic buying.
“So, don’t worry, there will be an announcement tomorrow… and we will know what needs to be done after that. Therefore, do not pre-empt the situation and go on a panic-buying spree and so on,” he said. – The Vibes, January 10, 2020
