KOTA KINABALU – Forty-four villagers in Kudat have been relocated to the SK Tun Mustapha relief centre following floods that hit the district yesterday.
In a statement, the district disaster management secretariat said the authorities mounted the evacuation operation early today.
It said the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force and police are inspecting several villages after the level of Sg Rampai in Kg Korina breached 2m about 9.30am.
Villagers are advised to keep up to date on weather warnings and river levels, and be prepared to move to higher ground.
The statement said five other villages – Kg Landung Ayang, Kg Sri Aman, Kg Air, Kg Tg Kapor and Kg Dampirit – are being monitored, while Jalan Tamalang, Jalan Airport and Jalan Pusat Bandar Kudat are inundated.
Sabah Civil Defence Force deputy director Lt Col Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said monitoring will continue.
According to state Meteorological Department director Amirzudi Hashim, a “red” warning has been issued for the west coast districts of Ranau, Kota Belud, Sandakan, Telupid, Beluran and Kudat, and the “orange” alert for Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran.
Izaimi said a “yellow” alert has been issued for the interior areas of Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Tambunan and Kinabatangan.
