JOHOR BARU – A frozen meat delivery agent has been remanded for five days from today by the magistrates’ court here on suspicion of being involved in corrupt activities on the issue of smuggling frozen meat.

The remand order was issued by assistant registrar Nur Fathiah Mohd Fedzir to allow the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe further into the case under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

The 55-year-old man was detained at the Johor MACC office last night to assist in the ongoing investigation.

When contacted yesterday, Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrest but declined to comment further as the case is still under investigation.

On January 4, four individuals including two directors of frozen meat import companies were remanded for their alleged involvement in the case.

Three days later, two officers from the state’s Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) believed to be involved in the scandal were also detained.

On December 2, Maqis unearthed a cartel’s activities of importing meat without a halal certificate before labelling it with fake halal logos for sale in the local market. – Bernama, January 12, 2021
