KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah state government has assured immediate action to deal with landslides affecting the main roads of the Pitas district.
“I am confident that the Works Department will take swift action to overcome the problem and ensure no recurrence of landslides in the area following heavy rains,” said Assistant Minister to the chief minister, Datuk Wetrom Bahanda.
In a statement, he said this is to ensure that the district is not cut off and to enable vehicles to pass through.
Wetrom, who is also Bandau state assemblyman, said the government will continue to monitor the flood situation in the northern districts of Kota Marudu, Kudat and Pitas in order to ensure villagers’ safety and render assistance to those affected in said districts.
“The authorities are always on standby to act swiftly on rescue efforts and distributing aid when complaints are received from flood victims,” he said, adding that the districts’ disaster operations room has also been activated.
Continuous rains since Sunday have led to major flooding in the three districts and also resulted in landsides. Floods in these three districts also saw 14 roads being flooded .
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rain and thunderstorm is forecast over Sabah's interior (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan), west coast and Kudat until Sunday (January 17). – The Vibes, January 14, 2021
