KUCHING – Members of the public have been urged to contact the Sarawak Forestry Corporation immediately if they see a crocodile in their area, instead of shooting a video and sharing it on social media before seeking help from the authorities.
The corporation’s chief executive officer, Zolkipli Mohamad Aton, said when several districts in Sarawak were hit by floods, the sightings of crocodiles have caused concern among the public.
“If there are any complaint about the threat of crocodiles, the public can contact our wildlife officers at 019-885-9996 (Kuching), 019-888-3561 (Sibu), 019-833-2737 (Bintulu) or 019-829-0994 (Miri).”
Zolkipli said the latest case of a baseless viral video received by the corporation claims to be of a crocodile entering a village here.
“We received reports from the public… Some said the incident took place in Kg Nombor 4, some said Kg Nombor 5, in Petra Jaya and in Lutong, Miri. We sent our team to the scenes, but when we arrived, there was nothing,” he said, adding that it is revealed to be an old video uploaded by irresponsible parties.
He said this will not only pose a hindrance to the team’s efforts, but also cause concern to the villagers affected by floods.
On the appearance of crocodiles in villages, he said due to the floods, it is possible that the reptiles are avoiding strong currents in the river, and searching for food sources.
“When you see a crocodile, do not worry. Immediately report to us, and we will put up a danger sign as a precautionary measure to prevent residents from approaching the area.” – Bernama, January 15, 2021
