MIRI – The male detainee accused of raping a minor in the Miri police station lock-up has been charged in the Sessions’ Court today.

“With regard to the allegations made by a 16-year-old girl, the police have already brought the suspect to the Sessions Court (children’s court section) and charged him,” Miri police chief Hakemal Hawari said in a statement.

“We cannot reveal further details of the investigation as it involves juveniles.”

Authorities have also vowed to thoroughly investigate the rape allegation of a minor and police negligence in the matter.

Recently, a 16-year-old girl lodged a report that she was raped by a male detainee when the two were in the Miri police station lock-up. The two policemen on duty have been suspended.

“As for the allegations of negligence on the part of the police, two police personnel on duty during the alleged incident have been suspended.

“Further investigations into claims of their negligence will be carried out by a team from the Sarawak police headquarters (from Kuching).”

Hakemal said if the two policemen were found guilty of negligence, appropriate punishment will be meted out.

He called on all parties to allow the police to carry out their investigations and not to create public uneasiness through speculative comments.

Earlier Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail gave assurances that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine whether there are elements of negligence in the case. – The Vibes, January 17, 2021
