KOTA KINABALU – Motorists in Sabah have been urged to be careful due to the continuous heavy rain since yesterday which has caused several roads in the state to be flooded and damaged, some even completely collapsing.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said most of the collapsed roads were in hilly areas now impassable by vehicles.
He noted the serious collapse of the Kota Kinabalu-Tambunan road in Kg Tudan, Penampang, and another one from Maang, also in Penampang, to Lok Kawi.
"We have asked the Public Works Department and also the concession company which maintains the roads to monitor and install warning signs for the safety of road users," he said in a statement today.
Bung, who is also the state works minister, said this when commenting on several landslides and damages due to continuous heavy rains since yesterday afternoon.
He asked road users to use alternative roads to their intended destinations to ensure their safety.
“Road users should always get information from the Public Works Department. I also thank the netizens who uploaded this issue on social media and through WhatsApp sent directly to me,” he said.
He added that repair works would be started as soon as possible.
On a crack on a flyover in Luyang, Bung said the structure’s consulting engineer was informed about the matter and the Public Works Department is now waiting for a decision for follow-up action.
“There are different solutions as there is an Irrigation and Drainage Department drain under it,” he said.
He said that as a temporary measure, the Public Works Department will place cement in the cracked area while its state director holds a technical meeting as soon as the report on the damage is obtained. – The Vibes, January 17, 2021
