KUALA LUMPUR – The number of evacuees in Sabah continues to rise, while the situation in Pahang and Sarawak is improving.
As at 8am today, there were 3,809 flood victims seeking shelter at relief centres in the three states.
In Sabah, the state Disaster Management Committee (DMC) said the number of evacuees increased to 673 from 194 families from 407 from 106 families last night.
They are being housed at 15 relief centres statewide.
Nine districts have been hit by floods, with Kota Belud recording the highest number of evacuees at 210, followed by Tuaran (112), Kota Kinabalu (101), Paitan (73), Beaufort (78), Penampang (76) and Putatan (23). No evacuees were reported in Kuala Penyu and Sipitang.
The state DMC said a total of 186 villages are affected, and more people are expected to be evacuated following bad weather warnings issued for several areas.
In Sarawak, there are only five shelters open, all in Serian, housing 569 people.
The shelters are at SK Tanah Puteh, which has the most evacuees at 341, the Kg Rimba Padi hall (96), Serian community hall (74), Kg Slabi Entukuh hall (32) and Balek Buk Janjun hall (26).
In Pahang, the number of flood victims has dropped to 2,567 at 28 relief centres in three districts.
The Welfare Department reported that Pekan has the highest number of evacuees at 1,632, who are at 16 shelters, followed by Kuantan (715 at five shelters) and Maran (220 at seven shelters).
After almost two weeks at the danger level, Sg Pahang in Serambi, Pekan, this morning dropped to the warning level.
Now, only Sg Jelai in Lipis is at the danger level. – Bernama, January 18, 2021
