Penang woman charged with killing 2 cats

BUTTERWORTH – A broker was charged at the Butterworth Sessions Court today for hurting and killing two cats with an iron bar on December 29.
 
Hah Choy Kheng, 51, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her in front of judge Norhayati Mohamad Yunus.
 
Hah had allegedly hit an orange female cat and a grey kitten using a 75cm-long iron rod, causing the deaths of the two cats.
 
The offence was allegedly committed at the B1 Pintas Kalui 1 playground area in Seberang Jaya about 1.20pm that day.
 
Hah was charged under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772) and, if convicted, could be fined no less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000 or jailed for a term not exceeding three years or both.
 
Norhayati then allowed the accused bail of RM10,000 with one surety and set March 4 for mention.
 
The case was prosecuted by state Veterinary Department DPP Roziman Awang Tahrin, while the accused was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind.
 
The Vibes had previously reported that a cat died, while a kitten suffered a mouth injury after being beaten with an iron rod by a woman.
 
Hah had apparently beaten the animals after being enraged by finding cat faeces in front of her house.
 
It is understood that the kitten died a week later after being treated by the state Veterinary Department. – The Vibes, January 18, 2021
