KUCHING – Police investigation into a 16-year-old girl’s claim that she was raped by a male detainee while being held at the Miri police station lock-up on January 9 found that closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage is unavailable.
Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said he has instructed his deputy, Datuk Fisol Salleh, to coordinate an internal investigation, the results of which will be known this week.
“There is a CCTV camera installed in the lock-up, but it does not have a recording function and can only be monitored by personnel on duty. I have also instructed the investigation team to look into it,” he told a press conference here today.
Aidi said the case is being investigated by the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department of the Sarawak police contingent headquarters as well as the Miri district police.
“Based on statements from witnesses, we have found that the incident (rape) did occur in the lock-up,” he said.
Aidi had previously said that police would conduct a detailed investigation into the allegation and whether there are elements of negligence in the case.
The two personnel on duty on the day of the incident were immediately suspended.
Senator Alan Ling Sie Kiong through a Facebook posting on Saturday said that the teenage girl lodged a police report over the incident. – Bernama, January 18, 2021
