KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today logged 4,008 new coronavirus cases, the second time it has breached the 4,000 mark.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a statement this evening, said this takes the national Covid-19 tally to 169,379, of which 41,087 are active.
Another 11 virus fatalities were recorded, bringing the death toll to 630.
The country also registered 2,374 new recoveries, making for a total of 127,662.
Of the active cases, 246 are in intensive care, with 96 on ventilators.
Dr Noor Hisham said five of the new infections were imported, all of them citizens returning from abroad.
Selangor recorded the highest number of cases at 1,391, followed by Kuala Lumpur (513), Johor (470), Sabah (406), Sarawak (203) and Negri Sembilan (176).
Kedah saw 142 cases, followed by Melaka (132), Penang (124), Kelantan (121), Terengganu (81), Pahang (52), Putrajaya (23), Perlis (3) and Labuan (1).
Dr Noor Hisham said 113 cases are linked to clusters in lock-ups, immigration detention centres and prisons, namely the Jalan Harapan prison cluster (48), Tembok Nanas (45), Tembok Mempaga (6), Telok Mas (5), Tembok Kemus (5), Seberang Prai Prison (3) and Damai Pelangi (1).
Of the 11 new deaths, he said, four were in Selangor, Sabah and Johor (3 each), and Sarawak (1), with nine involving locals.
“The ministry expresses its condolences to their families.”
He said there have been a total of 685 clusters recorded, including 16 new ones.
Of the total, he said, 367 have been contained, including three today, namely the Jalan Domis, Tinusa and Delima clusters.
There are still 318 active clusters, with 84 recording fresh infections, among them the Muda construction site cluster (237), Jalan Zuhrah construction site cluster (175) and Pasai cluster (139).
Dr Noor Hisham said 11 of the new clusters – Bestari Rantau, Jalan KKIP Selatan, Jalan Abdul Aziz, Jalan Digital, Tampoi Lima, Jalan Seroja, Persiaran Tasek, Jalan Usaha, Sg Ibor, Bukit Sebukor and Jalan Sejahtera – are related to workplaces.
These clusters are located in Selangor, Sabah, Johor, Terengganu, Perak, Melaka and Negri Sembilan.
The remaining five new clusters – Batu Enam, Bukit Gelugor, Jalan Niaga, Kg Balibata and Sawmill Luit – in Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Pahang, Johor and Sabah are community clusters. – The Vibes, January 20, 2021
