MIRI – Two more people have died in Sarawak due to Covid-19, even as new positive cases reached a new daily record of 255 today.

The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat today said the latest confirmed fatalities due to the virus were both at the Sibu Hospital.

The first was a 53-year-old woman who died on January 20 and was today confirmed as having succumbed to the Covid-19 virus.

The second case is that of a 91-year-old man who died yesterday, with the cause confirmed today as being due to the virus.

The secretariat extended its condolences to the affected families and said the death toll from the pandemic in Sarawak now stands at 28.

It also stressed that new positive cases today reached a record daily high of 255, breaking yesterday’s record of 238.

Today, Sibu district had 71 new Covid-19 cases, followed by Miri (57 cases), Kanowit (32), Song (27), Betong (14), Dalat and Bintulu (nine each), Sarikei and Matu (five each), Kapit and Sebauh (three each), Kuching and Beluru (two each), and Mambong and Tatau (one each).

Sibu Hospital now has 1,085 Covid-19 positive patients, Miri Hospital has 294, Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching has 154, Bintulu Hospital, 83, Kapit Hospital, 30, and Limbang Hospital, one.

The secretariat once again appealed to all in Sarawak to adhere to SOPs in place, in order to break the chain of infections as soon as possible. – The Vibes, January 24, 2021
