KUALA TERENGGANU – The state Veterinary Services Department has been asked to review regulations or enactments to enable stern action to be taken against animal owners who allow their livestock to roam free, especially on the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2).
State Agriculture, Food Industry, Plantations, Commodities and Rural Development Committee chairman Azman Ibrahim said currently, only local authorities in each district could take action on animals found wandering untended, not the veterinary department.
Based on the department’s protocols, all registered livestock are required to wear identification tags or tattoos.
“Some owners (of livestock) take this matter lightly by not adhering to the rules. In fact, they do as they please, according to their personal preferences.
“This gives rise to many problems, including the risk of infectious diseases, pollution and, worse, poses the risk of fatal accidents involving humans and animals, as happened on LPT2 recently,” he said in a statement today.
On Saturday night, two cars were damaged after colliding with nine cows roaming Km 291.1 on LPT2 near Kijal in Kemaman. All the animals died. – Bernama, January 25, 2021
