MIRI – Enough with gentle persuasion, said the mayor of Miri, as he announced that those who violate Covid-19 standard operating procedures will be slapped with a RM1,000 compound by the Miri City Council.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii said it is not only police that can issue compounds.
“The city council has the right to issue fines against SOP violators too. From now on, anyone who violates the SOPs will be issued a compound.
“We cannot compromise anymore.
“The Covid-19 situation is already at very serious levels here,” he told reporters here today after carrying out ground inspections in three localities in the city.
The SOPs spell out the compulsory wearing of face masks in public, compulsory social distancing, compulsory registration of personal details of clients at business premises, and comprehensive sanitisation and hygienic procedures at food eateries.
Yii said due to the pandemic, there is a marked decline in business in this town from what was once a thriving city.
“If we want to reverse the decline soon, we must halt the spread of the virus,” he said.
