KUALA LUMPUR – The police recorded RM395.3 million in traffic compounds from 5.2 million summonses issued last year compared with RM305.9 million from five million summonses issued the previous year.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director deputy commissioner Datuk Azisman Alias said this showed an almost 30% increase, translating into RM89 million.
While the total collection will be channelled to the government, Azisman said the traffic police force had failed to meet the targeted RM400 million in summons collection for last year.
“Last year, a total of 7,604 operations were carried out and, as a result, 7,655 arrests were made, of which 3,394 individuals were detained under Section 45 of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 for drink-driving,” he told a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today.
Azisman said 2,624 people were detained under Section 42 (APJ) 1987 (road bullying) while another 1,637 arrests were for other offences.
In another development, he said the police are in the final stages of developing a dedicated mobile phone application for the public to pay their summons online.
“The online system is being developed on portals and applications that can be accessed via smartphones.
“The payment of the summons will save the public time as well as contribute to efforts to control the spread of Covid-19.”
However, the name of the app, he said, is still being discussed with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.
“The application will be launched in the near future, perhaps in a month or two,” he said, adding that it would be perfect if it was launched on Police Day, which falls on March 25. – The Vibes, January 27, 2021
