LAHAD DATU – The curfew in waters off seven districts in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone), which is scheduled to end tomorrow, has been extended until February 14.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali, in a statement today, said the curfew covers the waters off Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Beluran.
He said residents are prohibited from approaching or being in these waters between 6pm and 6am.
“The curfew has been extended to ensure the affected areas are not encroached on by terrorists, and to protect the safety and well-being of Sabahans in ESSZone.
“The information gathered has revealed that militant groups involved in kidnappings for ransom, and the Abu Sayyaf group, are still trying to infiltrate these waters.”
He said the curfew will facilitate enforcement and the monitoring of boat movements, while the presence of security vessels will create a sense of safety for chalet operators and fishermen. – Bernama, January 29, 2021
