MIRI – Sarawak has issued an immediate statewide ban on weddings, anniversary banquets, birthdays and reception parties to combat the Covid-19 resurgence.
State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Dougglas Uggah Ebbas told a press conference that Sarawak logged 179 new virus cases today.
“Today, we see another Covid-19 death involving a 40-year-old man in Sibu. There are also 179 new positive cases statewide today.
“We are deeply saddened by the new fatality, which brings the death toll in the state to 36.
“We have found that many cases involved infections among families. There are numerous cases where entire families are infected.”
“We have decided to ban weddings, birthday and anniversary banquets and even small reception parties.
“The infections have spread so fast that we must stop them through drastic measures,” he said in his office in Kuching.
Uggah said a new cluster in the Bau district today logged seven patients.
This brings active clusters in Sarawak to 11, he added.
For the 179 new cases today, Sibu district recorded 65 infections, Song (54), Miri (12), Kuching (11), Lundu (6), Selangau (6) and other districts have one to six cases.
Sibu Hospital today is treating 1,068 virus patients, followed by Miri Hospital with 275, Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching (162), Bintulu Hospital (109), Kapit Hospital (105) and Limbang Hospital with one.
Uggah again appealed to all in the state to follow health SOPs to curb the spread of the virus. – The Vibes, January 29, 2021
