Sarawak records first rural Covid-19 death

MIRI – The state government today confirmed a Covid-19 death in a remote district called Song in central Sarawak as the first rural death due to the pandemic.

Before, deaths caused by the virus in the state have been reported in urban areas, such as Kuching, Sibu and Miri.

Song is located along the Rajang River in the deep central Sarawak basin.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a statement today said the death has been confirmed as being due to Covid-19.

“The latest fatality is a 41-year-old local woman in Song.

“She was hospitalised in Kapit Hospital on January 23, and died the same day. She was a disabled person, who suffered from obesity and high-blood pressure.

“Today, it is confirmed that her death is due to Covid-19.”

The Covid-19 death toll in Sarawak now stands at 37.

Today, 191 freash cases are recorded statewide, with Sibu reporting 81 cases; Kanowit, 38; Bintulu, 16; Matu, 12; and other districts less than 10 new cases.

Sibu Hospital today has 1,066 Covid-19 patients, Miri Hospital has 273; Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, 162; Bintulu Hospital, 121; Kapit Hospital, 92; Sarikei Hospital, 36; and Limbang Hospital, four. – The Vibes, January 30, 2021
