KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today logged 21 Covid-19 fatalities, its highest since the pandemic began, reported the Health Ministry.
All the victims were Malaysians, except for a 68-year-old woman who died at Ampang Hospital.
The country also registered 3,455 new infections, down from yesterday’s 4,214.
The latest figures take Malaysia’s coronavirus tallies to 222,628 infections, of which 47,847 are active, and 791 deaths.
There are 327 patients in intensive care, with 145 on ventilators, said the ministry.
Selangor continues to record the most cases nationwide at 1,145, with Johor a distant second at 708, followed by Kuala Lumpur (619).
Sabah logged 276 new infections, followed by Sarawak (121) and Terengganu (115).
States with fewer than 100 fresh cases are Penang (85), Perak (84), Negri Sembilan (79), Pahang (63), Malacca (62), Kedah (59), Kelantan (31), Putrajaya (6), and Labuan and Perlis (1 each).
The ministry reported seven new clusters, one of them being Jalan Ragum, involving Klang and Petaling districts.
It was identified following targeted screening at a factory, where 219 infections were recorded.
The Bukit Rahman cluster, involving Kuala Selangor, Petaling and Gombak, was also detected following screening at a factory. Forty-eight people out of 2,800 tested positive for Covid-19.
The Parit Jamil cluster in Johor’s Muar, too, arose from screening at factory, where 26 cases were logged.
The Jalan Cheras construction site cluster, meanwhile, has 332 infections, while the Semarak Bersia cluster in Hulu Perak was identified following contact tracing and screening of 58 individuals, of whom 19 tested positive.
The Taman Muhibbah cluster, involving a public administration centre in Kuantan, has 14 cases, while the Industri Serkam cluster, involving Jasin and central Melaka, was identified after screening at a factory saw 69 people testing positive. – The Vibes, February 2, 2021
