TAWAU – Upgrading the water treatment plants (WTPs) and expediting the construction of a dam worth RM400 million at Gudang Empat here are among efforts to address the water supply issue in Tawau district.

Sabah Finance Assistant Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said several WTPs have been identified to be upgraded including the Cinta Mata, Jalan Utara and Balung water treatment plants to supply more clean water to the people.

He said the dam at Gudang Empat has a capacity to hold 30,000 million litres of water.

“All these efforts need to be expedited to ensure that the lives of the people in Tawau are not disturbed due to water supply problems... this dam is also important because apart from water supply it can prevent flash floods,” he told reporters here today.

Meanwhile, Nizam – who is also the Apas assemblyman – hopes that the Sabah Water Department (JANS) can send water assistance to residents in areas affected by water rationing for a long time.

“Besides JANS needs to ensure that the water rationing schedule is followed accurately and does not change, further affecting the residents... it is also proposed that water storage tanks be provided at affected areas,” he said. – Bernama, February 2, 2021
