MIRI – The death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic in Sarawak increased today with three more fatalities bringing the total tally to 42.
The Sarawak disaster management committee secretariat today confirmed the three new Covid-19 deaths, with one each in the districts of Sibu, Miri, and Kuching.
The secretariat said the death of a 44-year old man at Sarawak General Hospital on Monday was confirmed as being due to Covid-19.
“The death of a 59-year old woman in Miri Hospital yesterday was also confirmed today as being due to Covid-19,” the secretariat said in a statement here today.
“Another woman aged 74 died this morning in Sibu Hospital, also due to the virus,” the committee said while expressing condolences to the families.
Today saw 148 new positive cases recorded statewide, with Sibu district registering 48, Miri 12, Bintulu 15, Dalat 15, Beluru 14, and numerous other districts less than 10 new cases each.
Sibu Hospital has 875 positive patients, Miri Hospital 333, Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching 155, Bintulu Hospital 147, Kapit Hospital 135, Sarikei Hospital 23, and Limbang Hospital four.
The secretariat said Sarawak now has 12 active clusters.
In a related development, the full movement control order in the Kapit and Song districts started smoothly yesterday, and will run until February 16 in view of the rising cases in those remote areas.
Sibu is already under an extended MCO until February 14. The other 37 districts in the state are under conditional movement control order until February 14.
In Miri Hospital, more health staff were infected by Covid-19, with 27 in all being given treatment in the isolation ward since last week.
The hospitals in Miri, Sibu, and Kanowit are now operating at full capacity. – The Vibes, February 3, 2021
