GEORGE TOWN – More than three million Unifi and Streamyx users in the northern region experienced disruption to their internet connection for six hours starting about 6.30pm yesterday.
A Telekom Malaysia (TM) spokesman told The Vibes the issue was resolved early this morning after it received thousands of user complaints, including on social media.
“It stems from an incident of broken cables in Pantai Remis, Perak. More than one main cable was damaged. It is believed the damage was caused by acts of vandalism.”
He said TM is investigating the incident and may lodge a police report on the matter.
Meanwhile, TM Unifi, in a post on Facebook, said the damage has been repaired and services resumed starting at midnight.
The incident had earlier caused public outrage, prompting Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon to postpone this Facebook Live interview with former health minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Lee said this was a major infrastructure issue that TM must resolve.
He also urged telecommunications operators to stay vigilant as the movement control order has forced many people to depend on stable internet connection as they work and study from home. – The Vibes, February 4, 2021
