KUALA LUMPUR – More police reports have been filed against former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas over his controversial memoir, My Story: Justice in the Wilderness, this time by Wanita Umno divisions across the country.
Wing head Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad said it is also urging authorities to seize all published copies of the book, for fear of inciting hatred among the many races in Malaysia.
“Wanita Umno urges the authorities to take stern action against Thomas, who is seen to be undermining national harmony.
“As such, our divisions nationwide have lodged reports with the police and other related authorities to take immediate action,” she said in a statement today.
For the record, there are over 190 Umno divisions nationwide, although it is uncertain how many of them with Wanita wings have acted.
As of yesterday, it was reported that 16 reports have been made to the police pertaining to Thomas’ book, including by fellow former attorney-general and predecessor Tan Sri Apandi Ali, and former solicitor-general III Datuk Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria, who accused Thomas of tarnishing their names and that of the public legal service.
Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is seeking an apology and RM10 million in compensation from Thomas after he was allegedly linked in the book to the infamous murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2006.
According to Noraini, Wanita Umno has reviewed the book’s contents and found excerpts that are seditious in nature, constituting an offence under Section 3 and 4 of the Sedition Act 1948.
However, she did not explain which parts of the memoir she thought are seditious.
“Thomas’ action to publish the book has embarrassed and insulted the country’s legal system.
“As a legal practitioner, who once helmed as attorney-general, he should have been aware of the Official Secrets Act and the oath (of confidentiality) he has taken,” she said.
Section 3 of the Sedition Act 1948 defines what construes seditious tendencies, while Section 4 states that anyone who does, attempts, or conspires to perform an act with seditious tendency is guilty of sedition. – The Vibes, February 7, 2021
