GEORGE TOWN – An unemployed man was charged in the sessions court here today with allegedly posting obscene remarks about police officers on Facebook three years ago.
The accused, K. Haridas, 40, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him in front of judge Norsalha Datuk Hamzah.
Haridas is accused of using the Facebook profile page “Defend People’s Right Groups” to post remarks entitled “Talk About GE-14 Part 11”, #VoteForPH #KickOutBN, “So Many Dummy Police Officers in Malaysia” on March 26, 2018.
The accused was charged under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) and could face a fine of not more than RM50,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year, or both, if convicted.
Norsalha then allowed Haridas bail of RM20,000 with one surety, with an additional condition that the accused be barred from posting anything on Facebook.
The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Nabila Huda Muhammad Nazim, while the accused was not represented.
The court then set March 11 for re-mention and submission of documents. – The Vibes, February 9, 2021
