GEORGE TOWN – Penang is rebranding itself as a safe destination to reignite the island’s status as a renowned tourist destination.
This latest image comes with a theme – “A Safe Destination Here for Tomorrow” – and adds to Penang being famous for its scenic beaches, delectable food, and deep heritage and culture.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in a statement said a strategy is being put in place to implement the “Penang Gradual Recovery Strategy – Travel Bubble” campaign and promote “responsible tourism”.
“But before Penang can be safe, the new normal of celebrating festivals virtually has to be practised.”
He said there will be no physical open houses organised by the state or state legislative assembly this year.
The annual “Miao Hui”, or temple fair, organised by the Penang Chinese Clan Council will also be held virtually for the first time.
“This year’s celebration will be different, but it is one that will bring about a feeling of belonging and love among family members, even though they cannot be together due to the pandemic.
“Efforts to curb this pandemic are still winding and require struggle, sacrifice and long-term measures for the health and security of everyone.
“In fact, the lighting of lanterns at the Kek Lok Si Temple this year – a symbolic practice to usher in the Chinese New Year – is held online, adding colour to the celebration this year.”
In another matter, Chow said the state is committed to helping those affected by the pandemic through the Penang People’s Aid Package.
With an extra allocation of RM20 million for target groups, the total now amounts to RM175.5 million.
He said in driving the state’s economic development, megaprojects will continue to be developed in the interest of the people.
“This involves the provision of infrastructure facilities to realise the Penang2030 vision towards a smart, green state.”
Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter chairman Raj Kumar told The Vibes that the tourism industry needs a “quick-fix” strategy, as well as concerted efforts from the state government and all major tourism industry bodies.
“The two-prong strategy attempting to boost domestic travelling and implementing the travel bubble will definitely create an influx of tourists into Penang.
“We saw the overwhelming response last November and December before the second movement control order was implemented.”
He said there should be more hype in the rolling out of state’s tourism campaigns, including implementing influencer marketing strategy, which is said to be the best medium for a wider reach.
“If we work together, we will see a much faster recovery.
“MAH has increased its focus on health, safety and social distancing guidance with a common objective of protecting the health of guests and employees.
“We foresee it will take another eight to 12 months for recovery.
“Even with the vaccine, it may take longer to restore the services sector to where it was before in the tourism industry.
“The hotel industry will not bounce back to the normal occupancy level until guests are assured of their safety and health.” – The Vibes, February 10, 2021
