KOTA BARU – The Youth and Sports Ministry has approved an allocation of RM10 million for the construction of a sports complex in Jeli for Kelantan to prepare for the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma).

State youth, sports and non-governmental organisation committee chairman Wan Roslan Wan Hamat said work on the 1,000-capacity complex was expected to begin at the end of this year and completed in 2023.

“The complex will be built on a 3.2ha site in the town of Jeli and it will have a football field, spectator seating, tennis courts, athletics track, and an indoor hall.

“Jeli is one of the Sukma venues for cycling and petanque,” he told reporters at his office today, adding that a RM30 million international-class velodrome would be also built next to the complex.

He said officers from the ministry would visit the site of the complex after the Chinese New Year holidays to determine the next steps to be carried out.

Wan Roslan added the complex was about 5km away from the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Jeli campus, which will provide accommodation for athletes competing in the area.

He said the university would also be the venue for petanque as it has the facilities for the sport. – Bernama, February 10, 2021
