TAIPING – The Geng Ah Fatt criminal group, which impersonated police to carry out armed robberies in Perak and Selangor, has been busted following a series of operations over the last two months.
Taiping district police chief Osman Mamat said 12 members of the gang, aged between 20 and 39, including two women, have been arrested, and various stolen items seized.
The gang leader, known as “Ah Fatt”, had been actively recruiting members in several districts in the two states since last August, he told a press conference here yesterday.
“Their modus operandi was to impersonate policemen by wearing security vests and brandishing handcuffs, and stopping victims, who were then robbed.
“Police have seized various items, including five cars, a fake pistol, two parang, a pair of handcuffs, police uniforms, two vests, 21 mobile phones, various identification documents, two packets of heroin and 570 yaba pills, all worth RM600,000.”
He said the seized vehicles had been reported missing in Perak and Selangor.
With the arrests, he said, police are confident that some 25 cases of armed robbery, police impersonation, burglary and vehicle theft in both states are solved.
All 12 suspects have criminal and drug records, and will be remanded until Sunday, he said.
In a statement issued later, Osman said officers have detained a 43-year-old man, who ran amok naked while wielding a parang near the Rumah Hijau housing area two days ago.
“The suspect has a history of being treated at Hospital Bahagia Hulu Kinta in Tg Rambutan, and acted aggressively after he stopped taking his medication.
“He has been sent to Taiping Hospital for treatment.” – Bernama, February 12, 2021
