JELI – The enforcement of the RM10,000 compounds, effective March 11, will be imposed only on individuals who breach the movement control order (MCO) repeatedly and who could potentially trigger the spread of Covid-19, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.
He said the government’s decision to increase the compound from RM1,000 to RM10,000 is not for all offences related to standard operating procedure (SOP) violations.
“We admit that many people have misunderstood (the move) and worried about the RM10,000 compounds. It is not for all offences, and this includes failing to wear face masks.
“It is for those who commit the offences repeatedly and violate certain SOPs, including interstate travel, causing the spread of Covid-19.”
On February 25, it was reported that individuals who violated Covid-19 SOPs will face a maximum fine of RM10,000 from March 11.
The matter is stipulated in the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 through a federal government gazette uploaded on the official portal of the Attorney-General’s Chambers. It also states that companies or corporations that violate SOPs can be fined up to RM50,000.
Hamid said a person issued with a RM10,000 fine could, however, appeal to the Health Ministry for reduction.
“From a fine of RM10,000, they will probably need to pay only RM200 after the appeal, depending on the reasons given,” he said, adding that police will be involved only in issuing compounds, not accept compound payments.
Hamid said police will also recommend the ministry impose the RM10,000 fine on entertainment premises that operate without a licence. – Bernama, February 27, 2021
