KUALA LUMPUR – Only 19% from 8,352 respondents support Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remaining in his post until the next elections.
An online poll conducted by PKR-linked think-tank Institut Darul Ehsan (IDE) showed the majority, comprising 46% of respondents, support Muhyiddin’s resignation as prime minister after having lost majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
The poll which took place from February 19 to 28 also revealed that only two of 10 Malaysians support Muhyiddin as prime minister until the end of his term.
The online poll also shows that 29% want Muhyiddin to dissolve Parliament for fresh elections while 2% said he should maintain the state of emergency to remain in power.
According to IDE’s research unit, the strongest sentiments for Muhyiddin to quit came from those aged 50 and above.
“The sentiments were strongest among those aged above 66 at 64% while 47% in the 60 to 65-year-old group wanted him to resign before the next elections.
“While the notion for him to quit was around 57% in the 50 to 59-year-old group,” IDE said in a statement issued by its research unit today.
The research unit also stated that only 39% and 42% of the respondents in the 21 to 29 and 30 to 39 age groups want him to quit.
In terms of ethnicity, only 41% of Malays expressed their support for the 72-year-old veteran politician to quit, with the Chinese (57%) and Indians (58%) showing stronger sentiments when polled.
This came as the Bersatu president celebrated his first year as prime minister yesterday following a national address.
Muhyiddin secured the top post following the Sheraton Move, which toppled Pakatan Harapan following the withdrawal of Bersatu from the coalition and the defection of 10 PKR MPs to support him, following a week of political wrangling. – The Vibes, March 2, 2021
