KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu is looking to strengthen its political cooperation with other Perikatan Nasional allies – PAS, Sabah Star, SAPP and Gerakan – to face the coming general election.
This comes after its two-hour supreme council meeting at a hotel in Putrajaya this evening.
Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin in a statement said Umno’s “divorce” letter on February 26 will have serious repercussions on the future cooperation between both parties and PN, adding that the letter is being taken seriously.
He reiterated the party’s stance that the PN government, led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, is intact and works to serve the people.
Hamzah said the supreme council has also expressed its gratitude to Muhyiddin for PN’s success in administering the country for the past one year.
“During its one-year administration, the PN government has succeeded in upholding the principles of good governance, transparency and integrity, especially in preserving the independence of the judiciary and rule of law.
“In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and challenging economic situation, political stability is very important to ensure all government plans can be realised effectively.”
This morning, Hamzah had in a statement said the Bersatu supreme council will decide the party’s stand following Umno’s intentions.
“We will then discuss our stand during the next PN supreme council meeting with our components – PAS, Sabah Star, SAPP and Gerakan.”
Umno’s Supreme Council decision to sever ties with ally Bersatu is made at the behest of the prime minister.
The party said Muhyiddin had requested it make clear its stand on political cooperation with Bersatu.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan in a statement today said this was discussed in a special meeting with Bersatu and PAS on February 15, with each party represented by five of their top leaders.
Following this, the Umno Supreme Council had on February 19 met to discuss Muhyiddin’s request.
The council had unanimously decided that party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will write to Muhyiddin stating:
– No cooperation with Bersatu for the 15th general election.
– The alliance with the PN government will continue until the dissolution of Parliament. – The Vibes, March 4, 2021
