THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an Anthropic report alleging an AI-powered operation used fake X accounts and targeted political messaging to influence Malaysian voters.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the commission is also investigating whether such methods are being employed on other social media platforms, including through the manipulation of comments and online discussions.
“For now, I leave it to the MCMC. They have indicated their intention to conduct an investigation.
“In fact, the Anthropic report itself noted that there were unsuccessful attempts to reach out to the MCMC,” he said.
Anthropic had previously revealed the existence of approximately 1,000 fake accounts on the X platform that were allegedly used in politically linked operations in Malaysia.
In addition to fake accounts, the report alleged the existence of fabricated news sites, as well as false content and accusations generated using AI technology.
These developments have raised questions regarding the parties behind the operations, though their identities have yet to be confirmed.
Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesperson, noted that the Anthropic report—which serves as the basis for the investigation—focused primarily on activities on the X platform.
When asked about the investigation's timeline, Fahmi said he had not yet been informed of when the report would be ready and would allow the MCMC time to conduct its review.
“I haven't been informed yet. I am giving them some time to investigate,” he said. – September 13, 2026
