POLICE are investigating the handling of Noorizwan Zulkefly during his detention at the Cheras district police headquarters after forensic findings revealed external injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma, prompting the reclassification of his death under Section 331 of the Penal Code.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M. Kumar said the investigation had been taken over by the department’s D5 Prosecution/Legal Division following a statement recorded from the forensic medicine consultant at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), who conducted the post-mortem examination.

“The examination found external injuries on several parts of the deceased’s body. The pattern of injuries was consistent with blunt-force trauma and not self-inflicted,” he said in a statement.

Section 331 concerns voluntarily causing grievous hurt to extort a confession or compel the restoration of property. Conviction carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and may also attract a fine.

Kumar said the full post-mortem report had yet to be completed as laboratory analyses were ongoing, with police awaiting further findings from the hospital to establish the cause of death.

Investigators were also seeking to identify the police officers and personnel involved in handling and managing Noorizwan throughout his detention at the Cheras district police headquarters.

“Police assure the public that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly, transparently and professionally, without any attempt to cover up the involvement of any party,” he said.

Noorizwan had been detained in connection with investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 457 of the Penal Code, relating to housebreaking or trespass with intent to commit an offence, and Section 379, which concerns theft.

He was referred to HCTM in Cheras for medical treatment on Sept 30 and was pronounced dead at 1.52am on Oct 1.

Kumar said police remained committed to ensuring accountability and would not tolerate misconduct. - October 28, 2026
